The renowned Robben Island Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with immense political and historical significance, is seeking to hire 7 General Tour Guides to join their dedicated team.

About the Role:

As a General Tour Guide at the Robben Island Museum, your main responsibility will be to lead engaging and informative tours that showcase the island’s rich political history, marine heritage, architectural landmarks, and natural environment. You will help bring the powerful stories of Robben Island to life, offering visitors from around the globe a deeper understanding of this iconic historical site.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Tour Management: Review tour schedules, ensure all transportation and equipment are ready, and ensure a seamless experience for visitors.
  • Customer Interaction: Greet tourists at the harbour, assess their needs (such as mobility assistance), and introduce them to the tour’s structure and island rules.
  • Guided Tours: Lead visitors through Robben Island, offering insight into its marine and political history, architectural heritage, geographical features, and natural environment.
  • Research & Knowledge: Continuously expand your understanding of Robben Island’s history and related political events. Stay updated on both local and global historical contexts.
  • Collaboration: Participate in discussions, training, and feedback sessions with peers and management, ensuring the accuracy and engagement of tour content.
  • Administration: Assist with basic administrative tasks, including reporting and logistical coordination for each tour.

Requirements:

  • Education: Diploma or Degree in Tourism, History, Social Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of relevant experience as a tour guide.
  • Qualifications: Must be a registered Tour Guide with a valid First Aid certificate.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English and at least one other official South African language. Knowledge of a foreign language is an advantage.
  • Skills & Knowledge: Strong understanding of South African and global political history, as well as environmental and heritage conservation principles.
