The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has officially opened applications for its Military Skills Development System (MSDS) 2026 intake. This highly regarded programme offers young South Africans a chance to serve in the military on a two-year contract, while gaining invaluable skills and experience.

MSDS Training & Deployment:
- Year 1: Recruits undergo basic military and functional training.
- Year 2: Recruits are deployed to various units where they can apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge.
Upon completion of the 24-month MSDS period, selected individuals may be offered short-term contracts within the full-time military force (typically lasting 10 years). Alternatively, others will transition into the Reserve Force, leveraging their military training in civilian life.

To qualify for the MSDS programme, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens (dual citizenship is not accepted).
- Be between 18 and 22 years old (graduates up to 26 years old are also eligible).
- Have completed or be currently enrolled in Grade 12.
- Have no serious criminal record or pending legal cases.
- Have no visible tattoos.
- Meet the SANDF medical fitness standards.
